A Narrative Review about Autism Spectrum Disorders and Exclusion of Gluten and Casein from the Diet

This research received funding from CTS549 group of Psiquiatry and Neurosciences from the University of Granada. Objective: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) appear in the early stages of neurodevelopment, and they remain constant throughout life. Currently, due to limitations in ASDs treatment, alternative approaches, such as nutritional interventions, have frequently been implemented. The aim of this narrative review is to gather the most relevant and updated studies about dietary interventions related to ASDs etiopathogenesis. Results: Our literature search focused on the gluten- and casein-free (GFCF) diet. The literature found shows the inexistence of enough scientific evidence to support a general recommendation of dietary intervention in children with ASD. Protocols and procedures for assessing risk and safety are also needed. Future lines: Prospective and controlled research studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up times are scarce and needed. In addition, studies considering an assessment of intestinal permeability, bacterial population, enzymatic, and inflammatory gastrointestinal activity are interesting to identify possible responders. Besides brain imaging techniques, genetic tests can also contribute as markers to evaluate the comorbidity of gastrointestinal symptoms.University of Granada CTS54

Measuring Technology Platforms impact with search data and web scraping

Resumen de la comunicación[EN] In recent years, European research policies and priorities in the agricultural sector have been developed through industry-based partnerships sponsored by the European Commission (EC). In 2004, the EC regulated a form of partnership called European Technology Platform (ETP) with the aim to define research agendas that would attract private investment. Monitoring the impact and performance of public policies, such as the implementation of ETPs, is basic for policy-makers. However, assessing the performance of ETPs frequently result into costly efforts given the current lack of indicators to monitor their variety of activities. In addition, since most ETPs have been set up recently it is difficult to assess their results, which are typically revealed after some time and take a considerable amount of time to be captured and processed with traditional methods such as surveys. In this study, we propose to assess the dynamics of ETPs through measures based on online information, given that it is fresh, available in real-time and is a publicly reflect of the activities of organizations. We firstly consider an ETP as an innovation intermediary and define its functions according to innovation literature. Then, we enumerate the particular activities within each function in which the ETP may be involved. To monitor such functions and activities, some indicators based on online data are proposed. This conceptual basis has been put into practice with a particular case study based on the agri-food technology platform “TP Organics”. Preliminary results show that the online-based indicators are able to measure the level of activity of the platform, if its scope is expanding or reducing, and how the importance of the different functions has evolved over time.Blazquez, D.; Domenech, J.; García Alvarez-Coque, JM. Effects of A Concentrate Rich in Agro-Industrial By-Products on Productivity Results, Carcass Characteristics and Meat Quality Traits of Finishing Heifers

Finishing diets in intensive beef production systems are mainly based on cereals, which does not take advantage of the capacity of the ruminant digestive system to digest fibrous feeds, cannot be considered sustainable and does not contribute to the circular bioeconomy. Our aim was to investigate the effects of an alternative concentrate rich in agro-industrial by-products for finishing crossbred Limousine heifers. Four pens with 12 heifers and four pens with 13 heifers were randomly allocated to one of two treatments: control (CON), a commercial concentrate with a 43.3% cereal composition, and alternative (ALT), a concentrate with a composition of 26% cereals and up to 73.5% agro-industrial by-products. Growth performance data were collected along the 91 days of the experimental period. Carcass characteristics were collected after slaughter and 24 h later. Vacuum-packaged samples from longissimus muscle were aged for 7, 21 or 28 days to study meat quality traits. Feed intake was higher and feed conversion rate was lower in the ALT treatment, but no differences were found in average daily gain and feeding costs. Treatment had no effects on any of the measured carcass traits (grading, hot and cold carcass weight, dressing out, chilling losses, subcutaneous fat depth, pH, temperature and lean and fat colour) nor on the meat quality traits (drip loss, cooking loss, shear force, oxidative stability, chromatic indices and pigment contents). Ageing time decreased drip loss and shear force, increased lightness and did not affect redness or surface colour stability. In conclusion, feeding crossbred Limousine heifers a finishing diet rich in agro-industrial by-products did not have any negative effects on performance, carcass and meat quality traits, which might be considered positive from the point of view of sustainability of beef production. Under the conditions assayed, ageing for 21 and 28 days improved tenderness of meat, without detrimental effects on oxidative stability or traits related to visual acceptability

Assessing Technology Platforms for Sustainability with Web Data Mining Techniques

[EN] Public policies have encouraged the proliferation of technology platforms that support the transition towards sustainable agriculture and the development of innovations in the food system. Provided the difficulty associated with assessing the outputs and outcomes of technology platforms, this work proposes a practical assessment method based on the retrieval and analysis of online documents related to the technology platforms. Concretely, the method consists of applying web scraping techniques to retrieve documents related to a technology platform from the Internet and then applying web data-mining techniques to automatically classify these documents into the functions that the platform should fulfill, which are described from the viewpoint of co-evolution of innovation. Data are automatically processed to obtain a variety of metrics, which are applied to measure the impact of European Technology Platforms (ETPs) on promoting an organic food paradigm. This method provides time-series data that helps to follow the evolution of the different functions of the platform and to describe its lifecycle. It has been applied to one platform taken as a case study, TP Organics, which represents a key platform for stakeholders that promote organic farming and agroecology as core components of an ambitious program for sustainable agriculture. The obtained online-based measures have been proven to assess the global evolution of the platform, its dissemination through the European Union (EU) Member States, and the evolution of the different functions expected to be fulfilled by it regarding the diffusion and promotion of innovations in organic agriculture. This research was partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities with grant AGL2015-65897-C3-3-R; and by the Spanish Ministry of Education with grant FPU14/02386.Blazquez, D.; Domenech, J.; García Alvarez-Coque, JM.
